Quivira winery

Quivira has been making Dry Creek wines since 1987. Since the beginning, the focus has been on Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel - the grapes that made the Dry Creek Valley famous. The winery takes its name from a legendary civilization believed by the earliest Spanish explorers to exist somewhere to the north of present-day Mexico.
The winery still honors this name throughout the owners' amazing collection of XVI-XVII century maps relating to the mythical Quivira kingdom. You can see some of the maps in the Reserve Tasting Room at the winery.
Perhaps this link to the past and interest in history has inspired the winery to adopt traditional farming techniques, now grouped under the biodynamic flag. The vineyards are on their way to being certified biodynamic, and the emphasis is on environmentally-friendly viticulture. In fact, Quivira Winery has recently installed solar panels that provide all their energy needs. The winery is also proud of its efforts to restore the Steelhead trout habitat on their estate, and even named one of their cuvee wines Steelhead Red.
Quivira is among the avant-garde of the Californian wine industry, and is definitely one of the most interesting wine destinations in the Dry Creek Valley.

Wines Offered: The winery offers some traditional Dry Creek Zinfandels and Sauvignon Blancs. The wines are well priced.

  Marc's selection:
  •    Steelhead Red: The traditional Chateauneuf du Pape blend of Grenache, Mourvedre, and Syrah (with a little Zinfandel to make it really Californian!). The aromas have an interesting berry/pomegranate nose, traditionally found in Grenache-based blends. It has a medium to light bodied palate, with a really juicy mid-palate and a refreshing acidity on the finish. A great wine with your pasta dishes or poultry.
