Seghesio winery

The Seghesio winemaking history in the Dry Creek Valley began in 1895. The family has crafted wines from their Sonoma vineyards for more than a century. However, it is only since the beginning of the 1990's that the new generation of Seghesios (Ted as winemaker and Pete as CEO) turned their focus to quality wines, leaving their history with bulk winemaking in the past. Their vineyard management techniques have changed tremendously with the general implementation of crop thinning, among other practices, that lead to optimum maturation of the grapes.
The Seghesio family owns some of the oldest Zinfandel and Sangiovese vineyards in Sonoma, which are the basis for their single vineyard wines. Concentration of flavors and varietal character is what Ted is looking for in his wines. The reds have ripe flavors usually associated with a good tannic grip. The extraction of color and tannins is increased with the use of punching down techniques during fermentation.
The Seghesio family winery is one of the best representatives of the Italian-rooted heritage of Sonoma County.

Wines Offered: The winery offers an interesting selection of Italian varietals such as Sangiovese, Barbera, and Arneis. However, the different Zinfandels are definitely the ones to taste.

  Marc's selection:
  •    Zinfandel San Lorenzo Dry Creek Valley: This vineyard, located north of Healdsburg, was planted in 1892. The nose shows intense cranberry with some vanilla notes. The palate is full bodied and voluptuous, and the wine has a good grip and a medium-length finish.
